KAMUELA PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA PRESENTS GALA CONCERT
The Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra will present its second regular concert
of the 2008-09 season at 4 pm on Sunday, January 11, at the Kahilu Theatre in
Waimea, on the Big Island. The concert, which is free, will include the
Overture to Die Fledermaus, by Johann Strauss, and the Moldau, by Smetana, and
will feature renowned Russian pianist, Boris Konovalov, playing Rachmaninoff's
Third Piano Concerto.
After winning first prize in the All-Russia Piano Competition, Boris
Konovalov started his career as an international concert pianist, soloing with
numerous symphony orchestras, performing solo recitals, giving master classes,
and adjudicating at music festivals and competitions. The highlights of his
career include performances in Moscow, London, and in the Jerusalem
International Music Festival, and collaboration with world renowned
conductors. Boris Konovalov has also recorded hundreds of live piano
performances on radio and television in Russia, Canada, and the United States,
and has released six CDs.
The familiar themes of the Overture to Die Fledermaus ("The Bat") have
delighted audiences worldwide, and will set the stage for the Rachmaninoff
Third Piano Concerto, one of the most challenging concertos in the piano
repertoire, and often referred to as the "Rach 3." The concert will close with
Smetana's the Moldau, a "tone poem" that musically describes a river in his
native Czechoslovakia.
The Kamuela Philharmonic will be led by its Music Director, Dr. Madeline
Schatz, who moved to the Big Island in 2002, after a successful 35-year career
as a concert violinist/violist and orchestra conductor. She studied violin
with Eudice Shapiro, Josef Gingold, and Henryk Szeryng; viola with William
Primrose, David Dawson, and Milton Thomas; piano with Jack Previn and John
Crown; and conducting with Michael Tilson Thomas, Daniel Lewis, and Paul
Vermel. Schatz has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Los
Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and the California Chamber Symphony, and has
guest-conducted orchestras in Utah, New Mexico, Washington, Oregon, Virginia,
and in London. She has recorded CDs with the London Symphony Orchestra and
the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra, and now lives in Waimea, where she teaches
music at the Hawaii Preparatory Academy and maintains a studio of private
students in violin, viola, cello and piano.
The Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra Society, whose purpose is to bring
quality orchestral music to the Big Island of Hawaii, is qualified as a
charitable organization under the Internal Revenue Code, and donations are
gladly accepted before or after the concert. For more information call Joel
Gimpel at 325-4991.
