FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
KAMUELA PHILHARMONIC ANNOUNCES THE 2008-2009 CONCERT SEASON
Dear Friends of the Kamuela Philharmonic:
Your Board of Directors and the members of the Kamuela Philharmonic are
looking forward to our fourth full season of fine orchestral music for
residents of and visitors to the Big Island, and we've planned some exciting
concerts with classical masterworks by Beethoven, Mozart, Bizet, and Smetana,
among others. And if your favorite number is three, you're in luck, because
there are many threes in our plans.
We'll open our season on Sunday, September 21 (note that 9 and 21 are
multiples of 3) with an all Beethoven program: Leonore Overture #3, and the
Symphony #3 ("Eroica"). Then, on January 11, we'll begin the concert with the
Overture to Die Fledermaus, by Johann Strauss Jr., the "Waltz King." Listen
for the third and fourth themes, which are in 3/4 time. We'll continue with
"The Moldau," by Smetana, and conclude the concert with Rachmaninoff's Piano
Concerto #3 (the famous "Rach 3") featuring Boris Konavalov as soloist.
And we're not finished with our "threes." On March 29 (the third month of
2009), we'll open with Mozart's Symphony #39 (another multiple of 3), continue
with the Tuba Concerto by Vaughan-Williams, with soloist and Big Island
resident Garry Russell (note that tubas have three valves), and conclude with
Bizet's Symphony in C.
But that's still not all! On November 16, we'll play another "pops" concert
at the Kona Inn oceanfront lawn as the closing event of the Kona Coffee
Cultural Festival. In January (precise date to be announced) Maestro Konavalov
will perform in a special fundraising recital, and on February 10, our
island's keiki will be treated to a special performance of Tubby The Tuba. One
final possibility - a Fourth of July concert at the new Queen's Marketplace
Amphitheatre in the Waikoloa Resort!
Of course, all of our regular season concerts are free of charge, because
we believe it's important to remove the financial barriers many face to hear
live, orchestral music. Nevertheless, we have expenses, including costs for
music, housing and airfare for off-island musicians, and administration, so
our Board of Directors has been actively seeking grants and donations. And
though our professional musicians have been donating their time and talent, we
believe it's important and appropriate to recognize the many years of
dedication, practice and training by compensating them for their efforts in
our behalf. If you'd like to contribute to help us continue to present
classical music concerts, we invite you to send a check, payable to the
Kamuela Philharmonic, to PO Box 6682, Kamuela, HI 96743, or, if you prefer,
through PayPal on this website. Because we are a charitable organization
described in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, your
contributions are deductible for income tax purposes.
Aloha,
Joel Gimpel
President, Board of Directors
