KAMUELA PHILHARMONIC ANNOUNCES 2008 WINTER CONCERT
Aloha and Happy New Year!
A perennial favorite and a world premiere performance will be featured at
the Kamuela Philharmonic's Winter Concert on Sunday, January 6, 2008 in the
Kahilu Theatre in Waimea at 4:00 p.m. The orchestra, under the direction of
music director Madeline Schatz, will perform Dvorak's "New World" Symphony and
the world premiere of Paul Csige's "Voyages."
Antonin Dvorak, a nationalistic composer from Czechoslovakia, was lured to
New York in 1892 to the newly founded National Conservatory of Music. He was
enthralled by what he saw as our nationalistic music. He infused the nature
of Negro spirituals with the spirit of Native American Indian tunes into his
work. His Symphony #9 "From the New World" was composed during his first year

classical
Paul Csige, an alumnus of Hawaii Preparatory Academy, is a director,
composer, video editor, sound engineer, writer, and cinematographer. He has
ten years of classical music training and two degrees in music from Berklee
College of Music in Boston and trained at the New York Film Academy in
directing and cinematography. He is an experienced editor and sound engineer,
writer of short stories, poetry, novels, and screenplays, as well as a
graphics artist. The world premier of "Voyages", according to Csige, is a
programmatic piece about the first Hawaiians leaving the South Pacific and
taking the long voyage into the unknown. The work will be accompanied by
visual projections of seventy images from the artwork of Herb Kane, Hawaii's
most well-known contemporary artist.
It is recommended that you arrive early to ensure a seat. Due to fire code
regulations, anyone arriving after the auditorium is full will not be
admitted.
